Back in the summer 2012 I was invited to go onto the roof of a skyscraper located at the corner of Oxford Street and Edgware Road. This is one of London’s busiest intersections, besides Marble Arch, and the north eastern edge of Hyde Park. The building, which was called Marble Arch Tower, was sadly a few years later knocked down. I captured this view as one of my customary multi-shot digitally blended panoramas. The light was clear, the atmosphere warm, and the buildings were glowing in the last rays of the sun as it slowly descended below the horizon. I know that exact moment that I had captured exactly the view as I wanted to see it. Alas I never managed to make it back up there to immerse myself in the expansive and extraordinary views but what I got that clear and balmy evening in mid June was immensely satisfying. The skyscraper was later rebuilt, but with all exclusive apartments now, it is well-nigh impossible to get up onto the roof. The view was absolutely amazing, offering 360º views but the most evocative view was looking east, along Oxford Street, and over the rooftops of Mayfair and Soho beyond. In the distance is the iconic skyscraper skyline of The City of London, and beyond the tall towers of Canary Wharf. At least the skyline of London as it was in 2012! Also visible in this photograph amidst the myriads of rooftops, spires, gables and terraces is in the middle the curved roofline of Park House, (designed by Robin Partington of APT), to the left in the foreground is the rooftop of department store Selfridge’s and to the right can be seen the huge U shaped building on Hanover Square, designed by Eero Saarinen 1958-60, which until recently housed the US Embassy.
