About The Artwork

On set while I made my short 16mm film The Lollipop Girls Struggle on the Hard Earth, I took photographs including this one of a character from the film. She dressed in several outfits and I created a set of paper dolls of her and other characters. This work title is a reference to the 1966 film Chelsea Girl by Andy Warhol, an experimental film that focused on various residents of the Hotel Chelsea during Warhol's Factory days, many of whom were Bohemian artists, drop outs, and drug addicts. As children imagine being an adult and long to grow up, young adults often long for a return to the freedom of childhood before the realities of adult life. Here, holding a cigarette but still youthful and free of the cares of an adult life, this girl stands in for the ambivalence of the transition years.
