About The Artwork

Statement: Victor Frankl believed in what he called the “last of the human freedoms”—the ultimate freedom to choose our attitude. Although human beings may not be in control of the conditions or situations that confront us, the important thing is that we can choose how we respond, at least through our choice of attitude. According to Frankl, this is not only our right as human beings, it is our full human beingness to be free in this manner. All we have to do is resist the temptation of remaining “prisoners of our thoughts” and choose this freedom, no matter what. Description: I asked a friend if I could photograph him. There was a spontaneous flow between us, so as we moved about the space I would make suggestions and then record his response. I was born and raised in Vanderbijlpark, a small town in the Gauteng Provence of South Africa, in 1969. It's a heavily industrialised area where the sky is pale, grey, or brown. Not knowing what I wanted to do with my life, a friend suggested I further my education in photography. It was then that I found an outlet to the pressing need for expression, without the misunderstood external gesticulations that limit the souls' expression. The purpose behind my work is to share what I have learned, i.e. with every experience, the good and the bad, life loves, teaches, incubates, protects, nurtures, and sets us free to live and prosper if we so choose. At the age of 48, I left my hometown and moved to Cape Town, South Africa, where I currently reside, and the sky is always blue.
