About The Artwork

'Studies in Natural Temporality I' is a photographic on site installation work based in the remote Wairarapa region of New Zealand, created as an integral part of the larger 2022 project 'Windows to Yesterday and Tomorrow', exhibited in TwentySix gallery in Wellington in 2022. The work draws influence from a range of art and critical discussion exploring ideas surrounding the perception of time and place in natural sites including work from the land art movement in the Americas of the 1970s as well as historical and contemporary abstract photographic work including but not limited to; Robert Smithson, Ana Mendieta, John Pfahl, and Hiroshi Sugimoto. 'Studies in Natural Temporality I' uses an experimental methodology holistically encompassing photo making, framing, post production, on site installation and gallery installation as equally important parts of the creative process, each feeding into elements of the other. It offers a close engagement with site and temporality in order to look at the way landscape speaks to its own inherent history and future evolution, engaging the photographic medium and installation practices as a means of presenting the intersection of time and space as visually embodied in various natural sites throughout the Wairarapa region. The practice consisting multiple visits to specific sites, initially photographing, then framing and revisiting the site to rephotograph through the reflection of a mirror on site, builds upon motifs previously explored in aforementioned established art and critical discussion pertaining to the window, frame, and mirror as well as the recontextualisation of site to engage time and place through the reframing of moments on site.
