The angular blurs of the background ocean seascape set the tone for a minimalist linear geometric treatment of the scene. A sparse inclusion of only a few wave images along with geometric rectilinear shapes maintains the simplicity of the composition. As the dictum by the famous architect and designer Ludwig Mies van der Rohe states, "less is more". This came to be the defining theme of the minimalist ideals of modernist design and architecture. I strive for this treatment in my own work and find the simpler my compositions are, the more meditative they become. An underlying imagined grid guides me in placing elements, but it is also an underlying structure, something I know is there but not something I feel obligated to use. I love classical jazz music. The melody is always there, but the musicians are free to drift from it so long as they and other musicians in the group can keep it in their heads and return to that original melody, their “grid”, at any time. This work is a visual form of a “jazz grid”.
