About The Artwork

"The House On Goat Island" presents a mesmerizing juxtaposition of isolation and opulence, inviting the viewer to embark on a visual journey through layers of intrigue and mystery. The photograph captures the essence of solitude and grandeur, weaving a narrative that transcends the boundaries of conventional perception. At the forefront of the composition, a vast, round portal frames the scene, serving as a window into an enigmatic world. The room in which the viewer stands is adorned with treasures of gold and other peculiar artifacts, creating an atmosphere of lavish eccentricity. The play of light and shadow within the room adds an ethereal quality, casting a warm, golden glow upon the riches that adorn the space. Through the portal, the viewer's gaze is drawn to the distant island, where a solitary house perches atop a hill, its silhouette a stark contrast against the expansive, desolate landscape. The island itself exudes an aura of isolation, surrounded by the tranquil embrace of the sea. The house stands as a sentinel of human presence in an otherwise untouched realm, evoking a sense of both longing and enigma. The convergence of these elements creates a visual symphony that transcends the confines of reality, inviting contemplation on the interplay between wealth and seclusion, abundance and desolation. "The House On Goat Island" beckons the viewer to delve into the depths of imagination, where the ordinary is transformed into the extraordinary, and the boundaries of perception are blurred by the allure of the unknown.

I have been a photographer for four decades in New York and currently reside in Brooklyn. My body of work is titled Misbegotten Places, which involves creating small dioramas from photographs I have taken. Through careful camera angles and lighting, these dioramas are transformed into lifelike images that can often deceive the viewer, while always conveying a sense of "misbegotten." The lines between reality and fiction are blurred, as these lifelike dioramas, when photographed, often deceive the viewer with their uncanny realism. However, true to the collection's title, "Misbegotten Places," each scene is infused with a subtle element of the unexpected or the out-of-place, challenging the viewer's perception and inviting them to delve deeper into the narratives woven within these meticulously crafted compositions.
