About The Artwork

#Crowdsourced Landscapes I have been thinking about the experiences of future climate change, our perception of the future landscape, and how we imagine our own landscapes changing from our memories of them over the course of our lifetimes. The threat of climate change and the future shifts that it will cause to the physical landscape will cause adaptations to our recollections of our personally meaningful landscapes. After photographing in the landscape in the traditional photographic manner, I move to the studio. The imagery is created using LEDs that allow me to "play" my own landscape photographs, column of pixels by column of pixels, over time while dancing with light in front of the lens. A 6' column of LEDs, what is essentially a portable light stick with a handle, visualizes my landscape images and allows me to move it fluidly over long exposures in front of a static camera. The resulting experimental landscapes generated by the LEDs contain traces of the world, as if from a future memory. I began developing this body of work while in residence in Finland over 4.5 months during the summer and fall of 2014. A desire to experience a place that will change over the course of my lifetime drew me to Finland, the first of the Arctic landscapes that I have created in this style of work. Through silent hikes, sauna sessions, and personal conversations on and in local landscapes, I was shown places on the precipice of change. These landscapes are the future memories of a warming globe.

Lori Hepner is a Pittsburgh based artist working primarily in conceptually based performative light photography, as well as curating exploratory journeys in nature. Customized LED devices are used to gesturally re-draw the bodily knowledge attained from physical experiences of treks across Arctic landscapes. A desire to experience places that will be changing over the course of her lifetime has drawn her outdoors. A recent collaboration with singer/songwriter Kendra Ross has manifested in her first foray into live performance with Intersection*ology. A feminist exploration into the power of movement and technology, Lori has created real-time light painting systems that they wear while drawing with their bodies. Lori's work has been featured in Time Magazine's Lightbox, Next Level Magazine's Pittsburgh edition, Wired Magazine, and has been exhibited internationally in places such as the Houston Center for Photography, Carnegie Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and in photo festivals in the Netherlands, China, & Spain. One of her Twitter portraits from Status Symbols will be sent to the moon in the Moon Arc for Google's Lunar X Prize in 2019. She holds degrees from RISD and RIT and is Associate Professor of Integrative Arts at Penn State University.
