About The Artwork

Isolated by surrounding sea, Malta is one of the smallest countries in the world, even considered a city state by international standards. But sheer beauty of it’s location compensate the small size, as Malta is one of the popular tourist destinations. In next project, part of his photographical body of work, Paweł Jaśkiewicz documents the islands cityscape. Working in a reverse engineering kind of way in comparison to other documentary projects, Jaśkiewicz finds subject of his works by walking, not researching. This intuitive approach produces photographs that avoid imposing arbitrarily established meaning or thesis upon documented places; in fact, elements of Maltan topography became a non-documentary story about the daily life of this small country. Desolated and clear of people, it makes us study the relationship between stern nature of the sea surrounding the island, and humans living there. The crossing point between artificial creations of humans and nature became the focal point of series. Print paper Canson Rag 310g

I am a photographer, born in 1991 in Poznań (Poland), a city where I currently live and where I received a Bachelor degree at the University of Arts. While studying there I also completed the exchange program at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London. I photographed under the guidance of Magnum photographers Antoine D’agata and Jacob Aue Sobol at the Magnum Workshop Tokyo, which led to having my work exhibited with Magnum. Since then, my photographic works have been exhibited through Germany and Poland. My approach intuitive, making photography a medium that allows me to relate with the environment while getting to know its real core instead of assuming the rules that governate it. https://www.instagram.com/pawel_jaskiewicz/
