The photo project 'Elia', is an homage to my mother who passed away two years ago. With my photography I want to create images that can express the sense of absence and memory. I chose to photograph the belongings left by my mother as a reaction to her sudden and more recent death. In her closet I found some beautiful clothes that she wore when she was young, handmade clothes from local tailors that no longer exist. She was very fond of the petticoats and nightgowns, and she kept them carefully in their original boxes. She loved silk shirts and evening dresses. To highlight their lightness and transparency I photographed them against the sunlight. I collected and combined old photos from the family album with objects that tell something about her and her passions. Some even of little value, but probably full of meaning and memories for her. After some time spent discovering, touching, and photographing her things, I felt that what I was doing was not just a photographic project, but it had also become a form of therapy, a consolatory act that helped me overcome the pain and emptiness of the loss.

Monica Ragazzini (Forli, Italy 1967) studied photography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy ever since she lives and works in Amsterdam. Ragazzini is known for her series of photographs of flying clothes. Since then the artist has worked with clothing as attempt to portray “the skin of our time”. By photographing her subjects on an iconic way she creates a strange stillness. A frozen moment that is rather an indication of an era than a snapshot. In her work it is not time itself that is represented but a reflection of it. Her work has been published internationally in magazines such as Flash Art, Wallpaper, Kid’s Wear, The British Journal of Photography, View on Colour. Her work was presented at the ARCO Madrid 2009 and in the group exhibition ‘Against Nature’ at Luis Adelantado Gallery in Valencia. In February 2012 she has presented her series Déjà Vu as second solo show at Metis (Ron Lang Art), Amsterdam and she was one of the ten finalists artist in a TV competition on Dutch television called “The New Rembrandt”.
