Tiny Dancers - 3 - Limited Edition of 12 Photograph

The inspiration for ‘Tiny Dancers’ emerged while I was in the midst of creating my ‘Lullaby’ series, throwing light on the intricate details that contributed to those pieces and magnifying them. Working with image transfers I experimented with different means of breaking up the pictures, enjoying the imperfections created by the chemical reactions between the inks. I was so taken with these little insects on paper that I started watching them in real life in my garden. The creator in me wanted to build beautiful, tiny stages upon which they could perform their daily dances. Not all insects share the same reputation in our imaginations. Our differing perceptions are in large part formed during childhood. We’re all familiar with the stories that romanticise crickets, moths, butterflies, dragonflies and bees. We’re told that they are good, that they serve a purpose. Flies, spiders and beetles on the other hand are not awarded the same respect, with many of us being taught to be afraid of them. ‘Tiny Dancers’ challenges you to see our insect world in a new light - to love these little creatures for what they are, each and every one critical to the delicate balance that keeps our world in harmony. When we learn to respect the role they play, we can begin to appreciate the beauty in all of them.
