About The Artwork

The morning I met this big bull I’ll never forget. He was with his father and brother walking tall through the forest as the kings they are. As they approached me they picked up my scent, froze, and sized me up. A few tense moments passed then the three giants returned to eating. Just as the scene calmed down, a juvenile came in from behind me. Titan, as I call him, gave chase at an incredible speed right past me to run the unwanted visitor off. My heart was pounding. I snapped a few more photos then let these guys have their territory back. The print will be printed on Lumachrome Acrylic with True Life coating to remove reflections, preserve from damage and give the image the best clarity and sharpness available on the market today.

After 20 years behind the lens, Derek Nielsen’s journey to capture, share—and ultimately, help preserve—the fragile beauty of our planet has taken him to more than two dozen countries and every continent. His stunning photographs don’t just inspire, they connect—linking audiences and resources all over the world to wildlife, landscapes, and people in desperate need of assistance, from Rwanda’s endangered silverback gorillas to the overfished waters of Antarctica. First moved to contribute to global conservation efforts while photographing the ominous splendor of Iceland’s Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, a haunting manifestation of climate change, Derek provides a portion of the proceeds from each of his sustainably framed and matted works to on-the-ground, local conservation efforts, including The Conservation Alliance and Borneo’s The Borneo Project. A native of Chicago, Derek carries a friendly midwest smile eager for a conversation with strangers. If you see him in the field or out at events don’t hesitate to ask any questions or just start a conversation about wildlife, conservation, and of course photography.
