About The Artwork
My model here is of marble, in Genoa; the women in the background are of marble on the left, bronze on the right, and are in Milan. Virginia, at 30 in 1870, G. B. Villa sculpted her in marble, which was my model. Her sixty years older husband had died; here, she lifts the cover for a last gaze, or to be certain he's really gone. She lived for another 47 years without remarrying; to depict her is to celebrate her.
