About The Artwork

Have you ever read Geoff Dyer's "The Ongoing Moment" -- he has this wonderful riff about a man in an overcoat appearing in countless classic photographs. It's the same guy making it frame to frame through the history of photography. I would like to think the same man in the same overcoat made it into this photograph as well. I snapped this photo soon after arriving in Los Angeles, and gave the dogs an invented name of my own. Since then I have continued the "Willie & Lloyd" series as a pair of transmogrified souls, always together, observing their fate in the world. This image was the first one, long before I knew it to be a series. The film negative was taken circa 1975 and this edition print was created in 2017. An archival pigment print on Epson Legacy Platine paper, a glossy paper that emulates the feel of a traditional darkroom print. Image size 5 1/2" x 8" on 8 1/2 x 11" paper Print #2 from an edition of 25 + 2 A/P It is captioned below the image and I have left a gap for those who would prefer to window matte the image only. It's fine with me--I know some prefer an image without the title. See additional photo above as example. This photograph is not framed

I have worked most of my professional life in the movies. That experience has left me with an instinct toward a narrative in my photos. Not always as a straightforward story, but at least as a structure to organize pieces of an image to work together. I look to elevate the mundane in my work, to create an image that rewards repeated visits. Much of my work is a continuing portrait of Los Angeles. I moved to Los Angeles as a young man to go to UCLA Film School, and it turned into a lifelong adventure. I have collected some in my self-published book “Small Pieces of Los Angeles briefly Illuminated”.
