About The Artwork

Reading the book The Lady of the Game, written by feminist philosopher Luisa Muraro, inspired me to do a series of portraits of women sentenced to death during the Inquisition. The woman in this portrait is Catherine Ross, called Regaida the third (the daughter and granddaughter of two women reputed to be witches, probably because of their knowledge of herbalism), is described in the proceedings of the trial as the one who “erubescit,” that is, blushed, during the inquisitor's questions: how many women in history have been shamed for the stupidity of the man in front of them?
