The strength of mutual support between two contrasting women is explored in this painting, which was inspired by the the artists' close friendship with a former flatmate. The women appear to be backing each other up even when facing in opposite directions. In 2007 this painting became the symbol of Joel Vos's research into the psychological impact of genetic breast and ovarian cancer at the Leiden University Medical Centre. In 2011 the painting was used on the cover of the research publication. Mr. Vos, who also acquired the original painting, included the following statement in the publication: "To me this piece of art shows the different faces of life that people can be confronted with, for instance when they receive genetic counselling. It is the visualisation of a dual attitude, in which one's light-coloured need for certainty contrasts with the dark-coloured uncertainty of reality." Artist in Residence, art'otel Battersea Power Station I view my art as a visual diary of my life. To paint is my way of analysing and understanding the world. My themes are always derived from everyday experiences and impressions. In my paintings I explore topics like movement, energy, contrast and the mystery of emotions. I am interested in how they interconnect into body language as the true expression of the individual.
