About The Artwork

After decades of both screenprinting and photography, I'm making prints from my photographs of statues of women of the past. Here, Giulia as she appeared when she premiered in "Norma" at 20; Balzico sculpted her in plaster for his Bellini monument in 1874, five years after her death of injuries from a train accident. He worked from paintings and photographs. I worked from the plaster which I photographed in November 2017 in Rome, and used two slightly different vantage points in combination here. I had photographed La Scala opera house in 2016. She had a wry humor.
