About The Artwork

Reading the book The Lady of the Game, written by feminist philosopher Luisa Muraro, inspired me to do a series of portraits of women sentenced to death during the Inquisition. The woman in this portrait was called La Zena, but her real name was Dorotea of Predazzo. She was elderly when she was arrested and tortured, along with her younger friends. The trial records write that “Nihil curavit de ispo tormento,” and she did not confess under torture, nor did she accuse her friends. Returning to her cell and knowing that her friends had confessed, so that her fate would coincide with that of the others, she self-accused herself the next morning.
