Limited edition giclee print from an original oil painting. Ode to a Zen Koan A koan is a paradoxical statement or question used to train Zen Buddhist monks to abandon dependence on reason, leaving the mind open for an intuitive response. Perhaps the most well known, by Zen Master Hakuin, being, “You know the sound of two hands clapping; tell me, what is the sound of one hand?” Or in my world… “what is the sound water makes against the edge of my boat as it floats in the sky above a Japanese temple”? I believe koans carry a direct correlation with surrealism in their ability to bypass logic to access a deeper level of experience. Afterall, the things that happen in this world which we call magic or miracles, are mostly illogical when dissected, but they happen anyway. And, I believe, more often to people who don’t have a need for rational explanations to everything. These are the dreamers and the artists and the mystics. Those who are comfortable wandering into the mysterious alleyways of life once in a while.

About the Artist Award-winning oil painter Paul Bond was born in 1964 in Guadalajara, Mexico, and currently lives and works in Southern California and Costa Rica. Paul Bond's art lives in the spaces between dreaming and reality. Drawing from the Latin American genre of Magic Realism, his paintings merge symbolic, surreal and fantastic elements with realistic atmospheres to unveil a world where everything is possible. At times, they simply express a whimsical aspect of life. Yet most works also carry deeper metaphysical and philosophical messages illuminating the world of our dreams and subconscious thoughts, fears and hopes. Bond’s work has won numerous awards and been featured in galleries, museums and cultural centers, including The Gateway Museum and The San Diego Art Institute. His paintings are now in private collections throughout the US, and worldwide. Corporate collections include Fox, Warner Bros and NBC Studios, Royal Caribbean International, Marriott Hotels, Scripps and Stanford Hospitals; and his works are featured in numerous contemporary art publications.
