About The Artwork

"Oystercatcher", original lithograph print on Japanese paper, hand coloured with watercolour. Limited edition (1 of 4), mounted and framed behind glass in a professionally made white wooden frame measuring 41 x 52 x 2.5cm on outside edge. Ready to hang (hooks and cord attached). This is a lithograph print from a limited run of 4 in this design. Inspired by oystercatchers seen at the Musselburgh Lagoons, in East Lothian, Scotland. I love watching seabirds and waders visiting the East Lothian coastline and enjoy sketching and painting them. In 2022 I have been learning the traditional printmaking technique of lithography, which involved drawing directly on to a flat piece of limestone (see photo) and then processing it in various ways before printing the image on to a sheet of paper. This is an original drawing created by me. Will be carefully wrapped and shipped in a carboard box, with a Certificate of Authenticity. Unframed Image measures approx 25 x 35cm on Japanese hosho paper measuring approx 30 x 40cm. Print is signed and numbered along the bottom. The oystercatcher is an easily recognised black and white bird with a distinctive bright red-orange bill and eye ring, and orangey/pink legs. In winter it develops a white “chinstrap”. There is a resident breeding population in the UK and they like to breed on shingle beaches, dunes, saltmarshes, rocky shores and inland along river estuaries. They eat mussels and cockles on the coast, and worms inland. UK Conservation Status: AMBER

I am a figurative painter based in Edinburgh, Scotland. I'm inspired by everyday experience of life and especially people and nature. My paintings often focus on nature and the way people connect with the natural environment in our modern world, especially those of us living in cities and towns. I think about how important the environment is for all of us, and how the changing environment may affect our future lives. I record my ideas in sketches, photographs or plein air paintings, from which I often then develop larger works in the studio. I enjoy using the physicality and expressiveness of the materials - usually ink, acrylic paint or watercolour - to attempt to describe in visual language those strange or beautiful moments which always seem to elude capture in the written word. I am inspired by contemporary figurative artists such as Peter Doig, Marlene Dumas and Chantalle Joffe, but also by the Scottish tradition of painting including artists such as William Gillies and the Scottish Colourists, especially Cadell for his bold use of colour.
