Artist Recognition
Artist featured in a collection
She was Sophie Arnould, a celebrated operatic soprano in the 18th century; she didn't see a lot of sunlight, up late nights, pale as alabaster. In this image she was in her role as Iphigenia in Gluck's opera of 1774, resigned to be sacrificed by her father Agamemnon, and dressed as Diana (which explains the one bare breast) to honor the goddess. As it happened, she was saved by Achilles.
