Inspired by theories concerning humans' connection to the universe, I have been contemplating on infinity, both bigger and smaller than what the eye can see. Since matter is mostly space, and we now know empty space is full of energy, the way of seeing life, matter and energy goes through a significant shift.

The Appearance of Being series has a double meaning. Firstly, it implies "being" enters the figurative arena; and secondly, what "being" looks like. These are deeply abstract themes and will be interpreted differently by people. I express these themes through senses of fleeting existence and mysterious or haunting forms.

Made from Western Red Cedar, they are laminated using hand planes to true each joining surface. Attention is paid to the grain direction for structural integrity. Here, the grain follows the down-slanting arm part of the sculpture to maintain strength. The surface is the natural wood, smoothed. Coming into direct contact with the piece by holding it and noticing the aroma of the cedar will deepen the viewing experience.

Appearance of Being
-----------------------------

From space to form,
The pulse of existence—
Fleeting, ungraspable.

Capturing nature
For command and inspection—
Alas, we fail,
For we are it.
