Abstract Wood Sculpture - Eternal Movement No.1 - 2019 - Yellow Cedar - Modern, Contemporary, Original, Dynamic, Smooth, Fluid, Flowing Sculpture

After days of exploration on paper Eternal Movement No.1 presented itself. The form bends backwards in a folding motion yet preserves its seemingly inherent internal tension giving it a mysterious sense of materiality and physicality not of wood. I have been inspired recently by contemplating space—how it is seen in relativity, quantum mechanics and metaphysically. The questions arise: Is there a movement which is not of time and space? Is silent observation and awareness the gateway into this other field of energy? We are in the land of yellow cedar here in the Pacific North West. Much of the industry is for exporting this wood, but nonetheless it can be found, albeit not so easily, so when I gain access to it I am very pleased. Carving this piece was a journey of focus and challenges. It started with choosing the portions of stock for all the different layers, flattening and gluing them together to form the block. The beauty of carving this material continues to reveal itself to me more and more as I work with it. By learning the character of the wood and working with it respectfully (towards the wood and myself!) this form could be produced. Eternal Movement No.1 is an invitation for contemplation of the forces beyond our common everyday experiences. It questions our concepts of time, space and motion.
