About The Artwork

Form And Formless No. 8 questions duality and the mind. By exploring the interplay between container and emptiness I come upon contemplative truths regarding wholeness and inseparability. Our thinking mind characteristically divides and analyses in pieces attempting to take in consideration all factors of the object but this fragmented process is limiting in that when the mind is occupied with this operation, the holistic observation is not taking place. I am inquiring into this dimension of the mind. In stillness I stand, caught up in time, Every movement, eternal And oh so significant. Must we forget the beauty of life? The weightless power of the moment? For, we are that which stirs the cosmos, We are that which beats our hearts, We are not different from the falling rain And the snowy mountains. All is involved in this great container, This container of vast potential, Unending energy, light and love. This sculpture is made from 3 pieces of yellow cedar laminated together by flattening each joining face. I cut them from the same board in sequence to utilize the consistent grain pattern. As the natural surface of the wood is preserved and not coated, meticulous final sanding takes place and passing with the grain is required until the very end. I start by sketching until I find a form that sparks something. This form, with all its intricate components possesses a strong sense of motion and dynamics. the spaces between the elements are just as important as the elements themselves.
