About The Artwork

The figurative upper form is born from mother earth and unaware of the environment which supports it. It is a metaphor for the unaware human being who is trapped in self-identifying thoughts and therefore not fully aware of the vitality of the life force which surrounds them and of which they are a part. The top form has been smoothed to 600 grit and polished with beeswax. I wanted to show the grain clearly and perfectly. It represents the innocence and beauty of a baby. The bottom form is carved out to match the top form and receive it tightly. It is left untreated - the natural wood surface represents mother nature. The sculpture is carved using hand tools. It is an example of organic joinery of wood pieces. I carved it in my workshop from concept to final form. The process required much attention to detail and risky manoeuvres.
