About The Artwork

This piece is made from a piece of walnut cut in half, flipped and glued together so that the reddish streak meets in the middle. Joining the wood this way requires flattening mating faces. Relativity. You cannot measure anything absolutely because a frame of reference is required and there does not exist an absolute frame of reference. The earth is moving in space, our sun is moving, etc. Also, the location of the observer cannot remain absolutely fixed. In quantum theory, two entangled particles can influence each other over vast distances. The universe is more mysterious than ever with this new knowledge. The title "Non-local Movement No.1" suggests first of all that all movement cannot be pin-pointed to a specific location with absolute precision because a point is an abstract concept which can always get smaller and more precise and also, in measuring location, there is required a stopping of the motion at a particular instant in the time-frame which is also abstract, as motion is continuous. Second of all, since all matter and energy is in constant interaction and exchange with each other, any isolated movement is also an abstraction - a conceptual extraction from its natural occurence. The beauty of movement caught by the silent eye of the observer, Watching, accepting, allowing, receiving. In stillness, the eye is open with the fire of attention, Which burns invisibly leaving the container yet to be filled— Never filled, always open and empty, receiving The flowing contents of interrelated parts— Inconceivable to the discerning system. The eye is not separate from the vast stream Entering. The eye breathes with blood, And in its wholeness, outpours a polar opposite— Spinning together, intermingling with all other actions Never ceasing, the cosmic dance of infinite pieces goes on into the night. The moonlight is on the gurgling brook.
