Made from sugi or japanese red cedar, Parallel Forces No.7 possesses contrasting grain pattern coasting across the surface of the form with the lighter sapwood preserved on the two peaks. The wide early growth (lighter of the alternating segments of growth rings) gives a sense of spaciousness to the pattern. The sugi wood was giving off a sweet aroma as it was being carved. The beeswax and mineral oil coating darken the colours and adds a sheen.

The Parallel Forces series acts as metaphor for the physical and non-physical dimensions of being—the wood material and convex parts on the one hand and the concavities and space on the other. As the two facets are intrinsically inseparable, they make a very appropriate pairing. As the theme for the series, this pairing is questioned in regards to its conceptual nature. What are the implications of these types of dualisms on our sense of reality and could the thought-based operations yield for a different way of seeing?

The crowded field
Pulsating with festivities—

Wind blowing softly,
Quietly weaving through—

A togetherness profound,
The masses shift in harmony.
