As the materialist views of the previous centuries are extinguished by modern scientific discoveries, we have the luxury of basking in our spaciousness. As we reformulate our understanding of matter as mostly emptiness, the world in our eyes takes on a new lightness. Here, with The Dawning of Light No.1, I continue to incorporate the space, both inside and surrounding the materal into the primary visual theme. The western red cedar here has the duotonality giving the piece another dimension of movement and balance. The surface is polished with fine grit sandpaper and is uncoated, allowing the viewer and handler direct contact with the natural material. The subtle beauty of the cedar and its grain is complimented by the soft curves and open movement of the form. The material and its absence interact in opposing tension yet overall harmony. The multidirectional movement is frozen in time yet carries the rings of years past in its very essence. The intervals between the calls of the crow Depend much on memory. Shutting the window Brings a deadening silence To the inner life. The wilderness is home. It is here where we are Comforted by the challenges Of survival and nourished With the fruit that is labour. ~Mike Sasaki - March 13, 2020
