Abstract Wood Sculpture - The Essence of Relationship No.1 - 2020 - Yellow Cedar Sculpture

This japanese yellow cedar block had these uniquely winding growth rings yet the verticality of the grain itself was quite straight and therefore well-suited for carving. The resulting grain pattern gives the piece an interesting surface motion and a certain natural character. The surface is left natural with its light creamy colour and is sanded smooth. The relationship referred to in the title is the general, human one. The interaction between the right and left portions of the sculpture is a dominant feature in the concept. The left portion possesses a sense of unwitting-"ness" while the right portion seems to approach the left side gingerly. To the writer there is a rather humorous facet in human relationship, and indeed similarly found in other worldly interactions as well, where contrary to expectations a given situation presents itself before one has time to prepare for it. This constant uncertainty in relationship hints at an underlying aspect of nature which involves the role of cognition and its interaction with the movements of life itself. The wanderer traverses Vast lands In search of the jewell— On the journey Short glimpses do disturb, Slightly stirring up Vast questions— Beneath the encrusted Questions, the answers Were always there, Shining in the darkness Of quiet suffocation And smothering damnation— The innocence of an animal, The infinitesimal divisions of time, The unceasing motion, And the smiling heart.
