My work is largely influenced by an ongoing inquiry into metaphysical aspects of the human condition. I am particularly interested in yoga, zen, quantum physics and Krishnamurti's work. This freestanding piece, entitled "Unfolding No.1" happens to be inspired by the Holomovement theory in Physics. Fortunately David Bohm described his theory in common language for non-physicists like me to understand to some extent. According to this theory, form unfolds into the physical realm from the enfolded field of the unmanifest. This piece is an abstract representation of such a mysterious movement – a movement with infinite possible varieties. The title of the sculpture implies a movement of unfolding (rather than an unfolded object) which embraces the implication of ceaselessness so important to the theory. Many of the recent forms I have discovered through the sketching process are influenced by an interest in calligraphy and brushwork. The stroke width variegation during the fluid act of writing adds another dynamic aspect to the resulting character. Likewise, in my sculptures attention is applied to the varying edge depth. This calligraphic inspiration carries through into the 3rd dimension as I infuse this feeling into the fluidity of the concave-convex relationships. Made from Western Red Cedar, and smoothed to a fine finish, the natural grain pattern is brought out to decorate the surface with its light coloration and modest contrast.
