“Acrobat” follows the dictates of the Roman polymath Vitruvius who believed that an architectural design should focus on three themes: firmitas, utilitas and venustas – strength, functionality and beauty. A truss for strength, made up of triangles, a wheel for functionality represented by a circle and the beauty of the female acrobat. With the incorporation of these three elements, “Acrobat” is a celebration of symmetry, proportion and human endeavor. The acrobat figure is cast bronze. The circle and triangle are brass and the base is mild steel. This is a limited edition of 15. Because this sculpture would have to be ordered from the foundry there is an approximate 10 week waiting period.

I work mainly in the media of printmaking and sculpture. When making prints my preference is for hard ground etchings, drypoint or relief prints. Sculpturally I work with bronze, glass and various metals, often combining them in a single artwork. I was formerly a Mathematics lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand for thirty years. Drawing on my expertise in mathematics, I helped to create a popular interest and involvement in mathematics by elucidating the nexus between mathematics and traditional African craft objects, and has been involved in the production of numerous articles, books, TV documentaries, videos and DVDs relating to that topic. I was the mathematician involved in the development of the series Africa meets Africa (www.africameetsafrica.co.za).
