About The Artwork

Mostly abstract the work is inspired by the desire to catalyze forms found in the non-human world with a vernacular design that occurs when form follows function. My first drawings for this came from trips to Portland in Dorset and areas in Avon where you can find many white horses drawn into the chalky hillsides. They always fascinated me and I think it’s the locations and landscape they’re found in that first piqued my interest.

Beginning my career with engineering in the mid 1980's I soon discovered a love of form and materials. In 1995 I gained a degree in sculpture after studying at Loughborough College of Art and Design before working as a boat builder, interior design project manager and Crown Courts administrator. I began my studio practice in 2001 teaching stone-carving to students with Autistic spectrum disorders and have since gained a Masters of Arts with distinction at Birmingham City University where I have taught on the undergraduate program and began a practice led PhD in 2008. "I utilise a wide variety of elements in my practice, incorporating stone for its resistance, durability and relationship to culture, landscape and body. Drawing inspiration from natural and synthetic forms I am interested in consonances emerging when form follows function. These vernaculars interest me especially when they question our place in environments and disrupt the binary: nature-as-self or nature-as-object." I am a qualified teacher, sculptor and researcher; with over ten years' experience in the lifelong learning sector, I now exhibit widely, engage in commissions and offer open classes for the public in stone sculpture.
