About The Artwork
I love being surrounded by reminders that Angels are among us. I have a body of work depicting guardian angels with large powerful wings. There is a comfort in the thought that during the storms of life, there are wings folded around those we love, offering protection. This sculpture is on exhibition at my studio in the Hoff Family Arts and Culture Center https://www.paceartsiowa.org/ and acts as a photo opportunity. Many photos may be found online with patrons posing infront of the angelic figure, and wearing the wings themselves. This interactive sculpture is all steel, with a two part clear coat. I used a thinned patina to add hints of blue, purple, and yellow hues to the wings. The highlights are subtle, and juxtaposed by subtle rust patina. I forced oxidized little lines in the wings to create a visual representation of battle-wear. My interpretation of these protective wings is that they couldn't be pristine. They couldn't be all shine and gloss. This Angel is a warrior with a few scars. The scars are beautiful- they are a permanent reminder of the souls saved. Interior or exterior installation. Maintenance necessary for exterior installation. Please wax every 6 months, or have ceramic baked.

The work is inherently autobiographical while also leaving space for the viewer's interpretative dialog. Woodford's goal is to create healing sculptures that embody a sense of hope. "We are all connected. We are all the same, and could see each other as mirrors but for the smoke in-between.”
