About The Artwork
A beautiful 28 year-old woman modeled for this signature Aphrodite sculpture. She became my muse, modeling for more than one sculpture and while doing so she asked questions, told stories. My eyes opened to Aphrodite’s energy of pure pleasure, pure sensation. I experienced this Greek Goddess as a temptress who is vain, selfish; a priestess who is lusty and full of glamour. When Heaven tears away from Earth, that is Aphrodite’s moment. The Water parts and she rises up from the sea. This Aphrodite is a fish woman, a mermaid embodying male and female shapes. The colorful scene inside the sculpture harkens back to Eve, the Biblical temptress. Adam’s face is seen near the tail looking towards Eve, wondering if she still loves him. The story reflects Aphrodite’s priority to pleasure over duty. Sculpture is mounted on a revolving base. My art follows the female form through time, culture, history and myth. Since my early school days I decided it was rather upsetting that in history books, there were no stories about women. Consequently I devoted myself --from the beginning of my consciousness and creativity - to bring the stories and images of women to the forefront in my art and writing. I am interested in their beauty, strength, ability to spring back, courage and playfulness. The women in my extended family were no-nonsense ladies who all worked. I had good teachers. I am a multi-disciplined artist: I write, sculpt, print and paint. Most all of my work is done with paper.
