Bellow is made of sections of plywood that have been "sewn" together with weed- trimming line. It is hollow and appears to be swollen or expanding in the middle. This is what led me to its title. Whereas a bellows is activated by two handles, this object inflates itself. The word "bellow" also refers to a loud and emotional cry- again, very relevant to my thoughts about the piece. The upper and lower "caps" are made of black walnut. The top is fabricated from several wedges of walnut that are laminated in two layers, which accentuates the wood's beautiful grain. The bottom, or pointy end is a lathe-turned walnut cone that is topped with a more organic "ruffle". The luan plywood has a light red aniline dye and the entire piece is coated with a polyurethane finish. This is without a doubt, one of my favorite pieces. It seems to hover just off the surface of the wall and provides the expectation of a breath to come.

Much of my practice includes collecting and preparing wood from local trees. When I began this process years ago, the material came from friends or neighbors who cut down trees and offered the wood to me. Now I have many trees on my property that may drop large branches. Most require careful and regular pruning. Recently I was forced to take down a sugar maple that was rotting from the inside out. This provided me with a considerable amount material that is dense and quite excellent. It also provided much of the material used to make “Red Fence.” The scroll form in the piece was made with wood I saved from pruning pear trees some years ago. I’d like to think that my work functions like poetry, except it uses forms instead of words to evoke thoughts and feelings that lie deep and barely realized.
