"bending the rules" is composed of walnut, aluminum, acrylic, and fabric and was conceptualized for Lux Art Institute's "Art Couture Show" during San Diego Fashion Week in 2018. The piece was developed to complement the HiM Brand's avant garde urban couture designs. The sculpture is contextualized with memories of living in New York City on 121st Street in the early 2000s. The curve of the one-way sign, fabric, and the oversized wooden needle juxtapose the city's hard edges while the yellow street stripe is pierced by the needle, marking a path that sees no boundaries. HiM Brand's menswear destroys and bows a one-way sign that is responsive to the people who live in the city. The piece was completed at the June 23rd show by patrons who chose fabric strips and literally threaded the giant needle, reflecting the democratization that is a through-line in HiM's fashion design.

My dialogue centers on critiques of the destructive performances of normalized masculinity while honoring feminine beauty of strength. My intention is for the audience to attach human emotion to the piece and see themselves implicated in my social critiques, moving beyond complacency or routinized outrage to action.
