About The Artwork

A Louis XV Bergere armchair has been ‘re-created’ with broken glass (from bottles of liqueur & drinking glasses) bound together by stainless steel wire (taking 200+ hours to complete). Once a symbol of power, luxury, comfort, intimacy and elegance, the chair in it’s re-created form implies absence, tension and fragility. The absence of the ability to sit may be seen as an absence of the ability of a storyteller to tell a story. To the storyteller the chair has become transformed into a symbol of loss, the loss of trust, the loss of safety, as it no longer provides a place to rest, listen, think, or just be.

Spreading intangible, embodied, and personal forms of knowledge is intricately related to how I strive to preserve cherished memories. An essential element in my work is the contrast between the rational functionality of the materials and the emotional meaning of objects. Transforming the belongings of a client by integrating their personal identities into iconic objects, I interfere with this relationship changing it’s meaning. The new piece becomes a carrier for memories and knowledge that is cherished and fostered into the future. Transforming into a vessel for the owners’ energy rather then just a use-object. Every art piece I make has multiple layers of meaning that transcend its material and tactile characteristics, like an object’s history, the memories of the owner en the value that is given to a ‘thing’. The exterior of a thing does not reveal the affinity one can have with an object and how valuable it is. This resides with in the eye of the beholder and is expressed through a dialogue with others.
