Chroma 005 Sculpture

This piece (as most of my current work) was inspired by chopping old oaken trunks for burning. I realised that old internally twisted wood provides aesthetically pleasing forms. So instead of burning them i set up to make raw sculptures out of them. As most of my sculptures Chroma 005 was made using only an axe to shape (the base is cut with a saw). It is unvarnished, only partially painted with yellow acrilic. Although not realised at the time of making it, the piece is clearly draws upon the aesthetic of german expressionist sculptures which a few years back i was quite interested in. Combining raw wood with acrilic paint (hence the series name 'Chroma') was the next step after a series of sculptures without added colour. The piece is as raw, unprocessed and unvarnished as possible. In case of my sculptures I view varnishing as something that destroys their beauty. It is like encasing a living tissue in a plastic (laquered) hermetic coffin. Thruth of the matter is that I am constantly fascinated by wood as a material and therefore can't destroy its natural beauty with too much interference. My hope is that there are people to whom this approach is close. Who enjoy the touch and sight of this material. There is a fair bit of chance involved in the process of sculpting. As stated earlier I only use an axe for chopping and forming of the piece. The grain of the wood does the rest of the work. In many cases it splits unpredictably having me to succumb to its form.
