City of Angles is a collection of artworks, that uses 2-dimensional geometric patterns to generate 3-dimensional archetecturally styled structures.

In the same way that computer softwares such as Sketch-up extrudes a 2-d shape into 3-d, the pattern is drawn out then given depth with forms of material.

The forms of material I use are themselves usually found in industrial and construction evironments - such as angle iron and industrial hollow section. These forms lend a authenticity to the concept, whilst presenting a simplicity of form that is true to the city landscape.

This - my latest sculpture in the ‘City of Angles’ collection moves away from the coarse oxidised walls of it’s predecessors.

The smooth, black surface and radiused corners of the towers lend a distinctly futuristic quality to the piece. The square form of the material creates an authentic skyline while being cut with contrasting angles that steer it away from a sense of reality.

Working predominantly in metals, I create an eclectic range of sculpture and contemporary furniture. Highly aesthetic in nature, you will find much of my work curvaceous and tactile, but with a coarseness that is lent from working with bare steel or stainless steel. My style ranges from figurative to abstract and is always in context with its environment. My current collection "˜Elements' focuses on Earth, Air, Water and Fire, and describes the reaction of when those elements meet. Developing the collection I concentrated on the proccess of using repetitive form of material - flat steel bar, to generate concepts and capture the movement of elemental reactions. The forms are designed appropriately for indoor display, but are perfectly suited to larger scale and outside installations for private or public spaces. http://www.philipmelling.co.uk http://www.artquid.com/artist/philipmelling/philip-melling.html htt
