About The Artwork

The artwork is inspired by Traiana's Column, a masterpiece of art and architecture from Roman Antiquity. This message is the “mutation” of meaning that occurs in the history, tribute to the memory of that past as relived in the present, in the dialog between the historical, artistic and archeological value of Trajan’s Column and our contemporary world. I was inspired of the sources of inspiration of Apollodorus of Damascus-itineraria picta. I interpreted essential aspects of its composition: the gestuality of the spiral movement of the frieze, the continuum, the original polychromy, to create an artwork with maximum structural and synthesis, reduced to pure geometry. Trajan's column has lost its original function. Its horizontal layout alludes to the archeological artifact as a museumized object, a metaphor of the idea that history flows horizontally. Is made of an aluminum ribbon held in place by a rolled-aluminum tubular structure . Its seven SPIRES are held in forced torsion, as if they were winding around an imaginary shaft. The alternation of the spaces between the SPIRES generates an optical blending between visible and invisible matter, as a harmonious ratio. I made the work in two years' time, 2015–2017. On the inside, I brought homage to the Dacian people through symbols and archaic signs of pre-Dacian culture and spiritualità. The outside has an intense chromatic impact that evokes the force of life. My designs refer to the Roman-Dacian world:symbols, icons and writings to create a new story, through the selection of topics and concepts, without a chronological scan. Starting from silkscreen printing, I developed a pictorial technique to create unique artworks (not to produce multiples). I “painted” the Spiral in “layers,” paint by hand and using screens with fifty preparatory drawings. Handling the screens as if they were groups of signs, enables me to create sharp images whose strong and clean chromatic impact and vibrant intensity of the colors.
