'Copper Star' is a OOAK fiber, wood, glass, and leather book art sculpture celebrating the place of copper in human history (and Arizona in particular). 5"x5"x2" closed, 5"x10"x 2" open. Double-paned cocobolo wood and carved leather covers are decorated with five-pointed stars (the copper star of the Arizona flag), western floral motifs, and variegated copper leaf and faux verdigris stains. The modified Coptic binding is accented by my signature long tassels in waxed brown polyester cord knotted with glass beads in shades of teal, aqua, bronze, copper, and turquoise. When held in the hand, this book's spine tassels drape sensuously through the reader's fingers, a tactile combination similar to prayer beads. Eight double-sided fabric pages are appliqued in saturated tones of teal, bronze, copper, turquoise, and multi-toned accents, with original miniature desert landscapes and copper-glass bead embroidery. The digitally-printed and gel-transferred text alternates with stylized sunset landscapes: "Oldest metal worked by man/ Copper salts tint peacock flames/Ancient green on fresco walls/Sterile copper guards sickroom halls/Turquoise glows like desert skies/Lightning tamed in copper veins/A copper star guides human fate." Inside front covers carry the names of famous Arizona 'copper towns' where mining drove life and trade: Jerome, Bisbee, Globe, Miami, Tucson, Morenci, Clifton, White Mesa, Ajo, Safford. Inside cover text: "Copper came into the Arizona landscape via ancient oceans and volcanoes. Copper drove human art and ingenuity, from the earliest explorers to today's vast cities. Copper will be here after us: ruddy wires turning green, copper salts filling mines and basements with veins of turquoise and malachite that some other species will treasure and smelt." Colophon: Leather, linen, cotton, glass, cocobolo, copper leaf, polyester, acrylic ink, silk, brass. I'm best known for 'Bookshelf jewelry": small, densely-worked mixed-media book art sculptures, which I've been making since 1997. Several galleries promote my work to museums, private collectors, and university special collections libraries. These are the opposite of 'big art for big houses', and are meant as personal meditation aids and intimate salon pieces.

I create art under the name Marian Crane (go ahead, I'm immune to the inevitable jokes because I adore Hitchcock movies.) I write and blog under the names Crane Hana, M. Crane Hana, and M. C. Hana (but they're all me, really.) I was born in northwestern New Mexico, and grew up surrounded by the spectacular landscapes, colors, and cultural blends of the American Southwest. My mixed-media paintings, fiber collages, wearable art, jewelry, and book art sculptures are inspired by my love of history, science, folk art, myth, and invention. I am fascinated with the human tendency to mix ornament and function. Since I’m a theatrical prop and artifact geek, too, I love making objects that appear as if they came out of a ‘real’ fantasy or science-fiction culture.
