About The Artwork

Reducing a human figure to a few shapes, and investing these shapes with lively quirks and gestures is a strong theme in my current work. The tilt of a head, the angle of an outstretched arm all have depth of meaning ,which is deeply ingrained in our lives. These gestures have the ability to make static objects like sculpture come to life, and live in the imagination of the" onlooker." The sculpture is made from steel and has a stippled salt and pepper finish, with a grey blue as the primary undertone , and speckles of black on top of this. The paint used is a durable auto lacquer, uv resistant, and tough. Glossy elements provide contrast and the yellow element is kinetic and floats, being suspended by a thin stainless steel hanging rod. The sculpture is mounted on a heavy steel base, with a gloss auto lacquer finish. This sculpture is unique.

Paul Stein was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1956 , and lives and works out of his studio in Cape Town. He works in the medium of metal and mixed media sculpture, and his works are in collections both in South Africa and abroad. I work primarily within the direct metal approach to sculpture, as opposed to the cast metal method. My raw materials are sheets of steel or aluminium which I shape towards the desired end. I am drawn towards simplicity in form and the idea of stating an idea with minimum fuss. I find inspiration in many things, but my prime area of interest at the moment is using the medium of sculpture to express human intent. I am also interested in the idea of fragmentation, of form, movement and implied movement in sculpture. How do you alter the static nature of sculpture, and make it come alive?
