Diver [Tuffatore in Italian]
49 x 41 x 24 cm [20 x 16 x 9.5 inches]
Fossil marble with black granite base
sculpture swivels on pin
copyright 2018 Kelly Borsheim

This gorgeous piece of marble belonged to my late friend and mentor Vasily Fedorouk. With the long, thin proportions of the stone, and my desire to sculpt a male figure again, the idea of the diver emerged. When Vasily was teaching me something of abstraction, the Winter Olympics were in progress. We watched the luge sport together and Vasily remarked that if I study the athletes in their suits, I would see that the curves of the anatomy are all there, but simplified. The diver is my tribute to memories of my time with Vasily, as well as my love of the human form and marble.
Please note: The rock fell off of my lap during carving. Because of the fossils in and the beauty of this stone, I decided to use glue to put it back together, and continue with the sculpture.
The diver swivels on a pin over the base made of an Italian sandstone, pietra serena. The dimensions of the diver marble are: 40 h x 6 x 6 cm [16 h x 2.5 x 2.5 in] and weighs less than 2 kilos. The dimension of the base are: 9 h x 35 x 18 cm [3.5 h x 13.5 x 7 in]. The base weighs 11 kilos and has fabric glued to the bottom to protect the surface of your table.

May 2019: Note that the Diver was moved to the USA and given a new black granite triangular base. See extra images. Still on a swivel pin. When shipped [from Norfolk, Virginia, USA], each stone will be wrapped separately and securely.

I am interested in why we do what we do and how thoughts progress. Since I was a child, I watched and touched and listened, trying to make sense of things. It was easy to feel the sadness of life, but also the yin and yang. So, I work to put beauty in front of us. I have been told that my work is “all over the map” but in my mind, everything is connected. I hope you enjoy your visit and will be enticed to go to my Web site for more work and writings. Thank you.
