About The Artwork
9,365 hand drilled 1.5mm holes, across 5 separate skateboard decks, stitched with 1,275 feet of Soft Embroidery thread create this contemporary work. The day of the dead skull is a popular icon in Latin American culture celebrating “Dia de los Muertos”. Based on floral motifs to create the overall floral skull image. The 5 decks are secured on a stainless steel bracket and are displayed in a perspex case which allow the Floral Skull Boards to be either hung on a wall or to be exhibited free standing. Each separate deck is wax seal stamped on the reverse side for authenticity.

My work aims to revitalize cross stitch, proving its viability as a modern day graphic medium. In an attempt to achieve this I fuse this traditional hand stitching technique with imagery from my visual universe, a mix of street art and pop culture. I am particularly inspired by image reproduction techniques, be it in photography or a printing process, attempting to see if, and how, it can be recreated in cross stitch. To accurately render and mimic the original technique that inspired its conception demands a high level of precision, some pieces taking up to a year of hand stitching to complete. It is exactly this dedication to precision, acquired over a decade of working in couture fashion, which drives my evolution of this craft into the realm of fine art.
