Woodburned, painted, and glossy lacquered Redheart wood covers frame 20 tiny 1"x3” hand-inked linen and cotton pages. The original botanical and geometric designs were inspired by the lush patterns and borders of the American Craftsman movement circa 1915-1925, including applied art from Frank Lloyd Wright and Pedro Joseph de Lemos. The Coptic-style binding uses waxed gray polyester cord, and is accented by long tassels knotted with dark red, purple, and lavender glass beads. ‘Folk Floral’ has no message other than celebrating an earthy visual and tactile beauty. This tiny book can bling up a bookshelf, or live happily on an office desk: ready to be picked up and thumbed through as a calming mini-meditation. I've been making OOAK and limited edition book art sculptures since 1997, with work shown in coffee table books from Quarry Press and Lark Books, in national juried exhibitions, Bead & Button Magazine, and three book arts galleries (Vamp & Tramp Booksellers, 23 Sandy Gallery, and Abecedarian Gallery). My work is collected by private and corporate collectors, and by the special collections libraries of over 13 major universities. I'm pleased to finally show some of my over 300+ pieces on Saatchi. Why book art? It's the exact opposite of 'big art for big houses'. It's an intimate touch for a bookshelf or office desk, a handheld vacation reached by simply opening a cover.

I create art under the name Marian Crane (go ahead, I'm immune to the inevitable jokes because I adore Hitchcock movies.) I write and blog under the names Crane Hana, M. Crane Hana, and M. C. Hana (but they're all me, really.) I was born in northwestern New Mexico, and grew up surrounded by the spectacular landscapes, colors, and cultural blends of the American Southwest. My mixed-media paintings, fiber collages, wearable art, jewelry, and book art sculptures are inspired by my love of history, science, folk art, myth, and invention. I am fascinated with the human tendency to mix ornament and function. Since I’m a theatrical prop and artifact geek, too, I love making objects that appear as if they came out of a ‘real’ fantasy or science-fiction culture.
