This work was inspired by the Inca Culture of Peru. The Inca Cross or Chakana is an Incan religious symbol formed by superimposed geometric shapes that represent the three levels of existence.
Hana Pacha - the upper world inhabited by the higher gods
Kay Pacha - the everyday world where we live
Unin Pacha - the underworld inhabited by the spirits of the dead.
The outermost cross represents the cardinal points of a compass, indirectly relating to the sun god or highest diety. The hole in the center represents the passageway between the levels. Chakana is derived from the Quechua word chakay meaning to cross or to bridge.

You often see steps in many of the Inca ruins around Cusco, and so I wanted to introduce that element and join the cross in an interesting way at the back. The pins are derived from Incan artefacts that look like hairpins.

About The Artwork

This work was inspired by the Inca Culture of Peru. The Inca Cross or Chakana is an Incan religious symbol formed by superimposed geometric shapes that represent the three levels of existence. Hana Pacha - the upper world inhabited by the higher gods Kay Pacha - the everyday world where we live Unin Pacha - the underworld inhabited by the spirits of the dead. The Cross is for sale without the stone base.

Born in England in 1969. The love of art and design came at an early age, my passion for gardens brought me into many different worlds that enabled me to explore different mediums to work with. I started working with artist blacksmiths in my early 20's, and enjoyed the challenge of designing large sculptures and architectural features for the gardens that I have created. My work has taken me many places, since 2001 my home and work base is in the Swiss Alps where I get a lot of inspiration from my walks in the mountains.
