About The Artwork

Jackal ‘Wood Spirit’, created from found wood Abigail has carefully gathered on her wanderings. It evokes the spirit of the trees it once was. Each piece of wood has been selected for it’s unique qualities of shape, texture or markings, carrying with it a feeling of the animal it is destined to become. The starting place for these pieces isn’t the idea to create a specific animal, but a careful assessing of the wood collection and as pieces are selected to work with, the animal characters begin to reveal themselves. Abigail works mostly with a range of hand tools in her London studio to create each piece. Touches of colour are added in paint and extra details often added in the form of discarded objects. It comes with a tiny hook on the back of it’s neck for wall display.

I am a London-based artist exploring the Animal Kingdom across sculpture, painting and print-making. Through all my work I celebrate the joy and fascination in the Animal Kingdom I’ve carried through from childhood, a never-ending sense of awe and wonder. Animals represented both in their true form and colour, and as anthropomorphic beings - in theatrical costumes, as spiritual figures in acts of ceremony, as storytellers and protectors, or as a medium onto which I project the human experience. I work with textiles, paper, cardboard, wood, clay, and metal - fascinated by new materials and processes, fuelled by a hunger to explore what’s possible in a new medium and where it might take my ideas. Recycling plays an important role in my practice, repurposing as much as possible materials such as old clothing, used cardboard, found wood and discarded objects washed up on beaches or littered streets. There’s a delight for me in the sense of soul a used object has, a glimpse at the life it’s had, the stories it carries, all feeding into the new life I create. Greatly concerned with species and habitat loss, my art aims to highlight the plight of the natural world from human interference.
