About The Artwork

Title: Latria / Technique: spray acrylic, aerosol varnish, mounting foam, frame covered with acrylic paint / Dimensions: frame 97 cm x 81 cm x 7cm, whole object 153cm x 81cm x 23cm. “(…) according to the respected orientalist Alain Daniélou, (...) “there is probably no religion in which there is not at least a substitute for the cult of the phallus” (...) The first Christians were reluctant to abandon the cult of the phallus. Until the 5th century, their phallic and monotheistic beliefs coexisted: phalluses were carried in Christian religious processions, carved in churches, and wax was dripped into the baptismal font to represent semen. (…) Medieval Europe, devoted to Christianity or not, simply believed in the penis as a talisman and protection against bad luck. Throughout Europe and Britain, phallic amulets were worn, and women baked phallic cakes, as in ancient Rome and Athens. During sowing and harvesting, the faithful took part in fertility festivities, as has been the case for millennia (…)” (Tom Hickman, Divine nature. The history of the penis, 2014)
