‘Marimo Lake Velvet’ Ottoman 45 x 45 cm Edition of One 2024 Jacquard, woven acrylic yarn, natural sheepskin fur Yarn colours: Rose Pink, Lilac, Orange, Royal blue, Green, White Natural Sheepskin Fur: Moss Green The jacquard textile is woven from acrylic yarns using the Stoll knitting machine, the designs are based on a series of hand drawings that have been digitised for Stoll software. This textile was woven as a single piece and will not be recreated, making the ottoman a one-of-a-kind collector's item. The ottoman features a seat made of 100% natural fur, deep pile. Light green in colour, this sheepskin is ecologically dyed in New Zealand. Marimo is a rare algae found in fresh water lakes which grows into large green balls with a velvety appearance. The history of Marimo can be traced back to a few freshwater lakes around Europe and Japan. The most well known is Lake Akan in Japan where Marimo grow slowly in the cold freshwater lake. The tale of Marimo is of two lovers, unable to be united, the daughter of a chief and son of a commoner, run away together but fall into Lake Akan and drown, their hearts becoming the first Marimo. Today, in Japan and now all over the world, Marimo are given as a token of love, and are often used in rituals by the people of Ainu. Colonies of marimo balls are known to form in Japan and Iceland, but their population has been declining. About: The term “pouffe” is derived from the French word bouffer, meaning to smoke, an onomatopoeic term echoing a diffused softness and the puffed appearance of the furniture. Originating in the 18th-century Ottoman Empire, pouffe chairs, also known as ottomans, were versatile pieces, serving as footrests, extra seating, makeshift coffee tables if paired with a tray, or simply an enigmatic piece of furniture that would create a plushness to the room.
