About The Artwork

This art was inspired by the common use of the justice system as a political tool. Many prosecutors use the criminal justice system as a way to further their personal political ambitions. Minorities and the poor, pay the price for this ambition. The public perp walk illustrates a common tool used to gain a public conviction long before a suspect stands trial before a jury of their peers. The "perp" in this sculpture represented by the highly figured walnut chair hides his face under his jacket to try to save his last shred of humanity before the criminal justice system strip away what remains. The aluminum chair, handcuffed to the perp, is rigid and formal system merely doing the routine process of dispensing justice.

My dialogue centers on critiques of the destructive performances of normalized masculinity while honoring feminine beauty of strength. My intention is for the audience to attach human emotion to the piece and see themselves implicated in my social critiques, moving beyond complacency or routinized outrage to action. Scott Shoemate is an emerging southern Californian contemporary artist. His work has been exhibited in Ventura, Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego. Scott has lived in New York City, Illinois, New Jersey, Montreal, and Texas. He is a graduate of The American University and Northwestern University and lives in San Diego with his wife and three children.
