Play it, can Sculpture

Casablanca, the classic 1942 movie... It raises more questions than it answers. Why does Ilsa have two brooms for shoulder pads? Or are they wads of state secrets? Why can’t Rick afford to pay someone to iron his raincoat? Why does Ilsa change the lyrics of ‘As time goes by,’ to a passive-aggressive song about her father ‘Da-ddy da-ddy- da-dumb, Da-ddy da-ddy- da-dumb…’? Eventually, I had to put the characters into a can to try and resolve these mysteries. I wanted to name this creation ‘Here’s lookin’ canned tuna, kid’, but was thrown out of the Bad Pun Society for lowering standards. I’ve painted the can and figures in keeping with the black and white movie but kept their natural skin tones. The design on the front of the can resembles the neon sign above the entrance of ‘Rick’s Café Americain’. This little piece of art is my tribute to the incredible talent of Ingrid Bergman. Her intensity lay just below the surface in whatever role she played. Here’s lookin’ at you, Ingrid. We’ll always have your movies. The sculpture can stand by itself or hang on the wall. It comes complete with hanging hardware on the back, painted to match the piece. It also comes with a signed certificate of authenticity.
